ELMS – United Autosports wins Portimão round
Anglo-American team United Autosports and its #22 ORECA 07-Gibson clinched their first win this year at the 4 Hours of Portimão, final race of the 2021 European Le Mans Series season.
2020 European Le Mans Series champion United Autosports claimed its first victory this year at the 4 Hours of Portimão thanks to Hanson/Aberdein/Gamble in the #22. Tom Gamble: "Phil Hanson had a great start, so we just tried go from there. We had a very aggressive pneumatic strategy so we had to get into the rhythm right away. It worked well and it's fantastic to win the last race." The team triumphed with a 21-second lead on Team WRT's #41 ORECA 07-Gibson, this season's title winner. Algarve Pro Racing #24 ORECA 07-Gibson crossed the finish line in third place trailing the #41 by just one second.
In LMP3, DKR Engineering's #4 Duqueine M-30-D08-Nissan was the first to cross the line, but was subsequently relegated to fourth place due to a faulty tail light. Consequently, Inter Europol Competition's #13 Ligier JS P320-Nissan claimed victory ahead of a pair of Ligiers fielded by United Autosports (#2) and Graff Racing (#9) respectively. The penalty did not however deprive DKR Engineering of the LMP3 title.
The LMGTE class win and title were claimed by Iron Lynx's #80 Ferrari 488 GTE Evo with Matteo Cressoni, Rino Mastronardi and Miguel Molina finishing ahead of Proton Competition's #93 Porsche 911 RSR-19 and the team's #83 Ferrari 488 GTE Evo sister car.
The 2022 European Le Mans Series season will kick off on 11-12 April at Le Castellet with the official testing sessions followed by a four-hour race on 17 April.
